Alex DeBrincat trade details: Senators acquire star winger from Blackhawks

The Ottawa Senators made the blockbuster move to acquire winger Alex DeBrincat from the Chicago Blackhawks.

On the day of the 2022 NHL Draft, one trade went down, as the Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Alexandar Georgiev from the New York Rangers. Let’s just say that that was just a tease for the craziness that was set to occur in the NHL on July 7, 2022.

Heading into Night 1 of the NHL Draft, there was buzz that the Chicago Blackhawks could move 24-year-old star winger Alex DeBrincat. Given how consistently good he has been early on his career, you’d have to image that they would get a haul from an interested team.

Later on in the day, it was reported that the Ottawa Senators have won the DeBrincat sweepstakes, as they successfully negotiated a deal with the Blackhawks. But what did they give up?

Senators: Alex DeBrincat full trade details

According to multiple reports, the Senators surrendered their No. 7 and 39 picks this year, and a third-round pick in 2024 to the Blackhawks in exchange for DeBrincat.

For those wondering why Chicago may not have received a huge package of draft capital for DeBrincat, it is important to note his contract status. He is entering the final year of his three-year, $19.2 million contract signed, where he will carry a $6.4 million cap hit, per Cap Friendly. From there, he will become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.

The Senators are coming off of a season where they finished seventh in the Atlantic Division and missed out on the playoffs. Now, they have made the huge move to bring in another young goal scorer on a roster that already includes Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle.

This past season, DeBrincat scored 41 goals (tied for career-high) and tallied 37 assist (career-high) in 82 games. Through his career, DeBrincat put up a total of 307 points (160 goals, 147 assists).

Losing DeBrincat is a big loss for a Chicago team looking to rebuild, and a huge gain for Ottawa, a young team looking to make a return to the playoffs for the first time since they fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 of the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals.
