Back To School: 5 Recurring Issues For American Students

Some problems persist, causing children to refuse to attend a school or resist learning. The first challenge is identifying the underlying issues that are currently preventing students from learning. This is due to the fact that the problems can change depending on who is being asked, the students, parents, educators, or legislators. Challenges like this do not happen in a particular school but can likely be experienced by students in any other school.

In this article, we will discover the top five issues that american schools and its students are dealing with:

  1. Class Size

Even though students are listening to the same teacher at the same time, class size poses a significant challenge to teaching and learning. A small classroom with fewer students is easy to manage. According to research on elementary school students, small classes usually comprise less than 20 students, whereas “small” classes for high school students are slightly larger in number. Moreover, there should be a balance between class size and teacher workload. Class size reduction may increase teacher workload if the number of students per class is reduced. If the teacher has more than one class per day, adjustments are needed to be made by the school to make it work.

When compared to their peers in larger classes, students in smaller classes perform better in all subjects and assessments. Small class sizes have long-lasting effects on elementary school students, they receive adequate feedback on multiple drafts and affects the quality of writing instruction at all levels. In smaller classes, students talk and participate more, they interact with the teacher than simply listening passively.

  1. Bullying

Bullying has existed for a long time, but it continues to have a serious impact on many students’ learning abilities. Everyone in this cycle can be affected, including the person bullied, the person responsible for bullying, and the witnesses in the bullying incident. It has been linked to several negative outcomes, including mental health problems, and many students will suffer if the bullying problems are not addressed.

Children who are bullied may experience physical, social, emotional, academic, and mental health issues. Children who have been bullied are likely to develop depression, anxiety, sadness, sleeping and eating disorders, and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities.  Academic performance and school participation may suffer as well. They are more likely to be absent, skipping, or eventually dropping out of school.  These issues may persist into adulthood.

  1. Student’s Attitude And Behaviour

Student attitudes, such as apathy and disrespect for teachers, are also cited by many teachers as a major issue in today’s schools. Academic achievement is linked to attitudes toward school and learning. Students who perform poorly in school are more pessimistic towards learning, they believe that school and learning will not help them succeed in the future.

The important factors influencing students’ attitudes toward school, includes their subjects and the school’s policies and requirements. Consequently, it’s the school’s responsibility to find ways to deal with such behaviour and to motivate the students.

  1. Parental Involvement

It’s not enough to simply send your child to school, you must also participate as a parent. The parent must have a positive relationship with the child’s teacher because this will have a remarkable impact on the child. Having a strained relationship with your child’s teacher may affect the teacher’s attitude towards your child, resulting in a negative relationship with both parties. Preferably, having a positive relationship with the teacher would be beneficial to your child’s education.

As a parent, you must also communicate with the teacher to learn how you can assist with your child’s homework and other school activities. As a parent, you must be aware of your child’s interests, academically or in other fields. Some students are gifted in sports rather than academics, they may enjoy school activities including sporting events.

Purchasing your child’s school supplies is vital, because it aids in their learning. It improves academic performance and helps maintain a positive impact on the student’s attitude and behaviour. A child’s perspective toward school, classroom conduct, self-esteem, absenteeism, and motivation can all be influenced by the parent’s interest and encouragement in their child’s education.

  1. Student’s Health

Students who are in good health perform better in school than those who are not. Poor health can lead to issues such as increased chances of failing in school, poor concentration, grade retention, and absenteeism. Their health entails not only their physical well-being but also their mental well-being.

The food they eat, the water they drink, and where they stay affects a student’s health. The teacher and parents must exercise caution and keep a close eye on the student’s health condition. Be sure to check if they are eating healthy foods all the time, drinking clean water, using clean toilets, and sleeping enough at home. If a child does not get enough sleep at home, they will be unable to concentrate well in class.

Conclusion

Education is extremely important, and children must have unrestricted access to it. These are some of the most common challenges that children face at school, knowing what this information makes it easier to find a solution. If you don’t dismiss them, you will be assisting a large number of students in receiving a better education that will benefit them in the future.
