Matt Fitzpatrick wins dramatic US Open over Will Zalatoris: Golf Twitter celebrates

Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2022 US Open in the most dramatic way imaginable, and Twitter users lost their minds.

If you wanted drama in your major golf event, then the 122nd US Open provided just that. Entering the final round, Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris both held the lead, and it was only fitting that it came down to the final hole.

On the 18th hole, Fitzpatrick finished 6-under after a clutch par. He reached that point after he made a shot out of the bunker and onto the green. Zalatoris had the chance to send the US Open to a playoff, but he just missed out on the tying shot. That helped Fitzpatrick clinch his first major victory.

Twitter users lost their minds after following the epic conclusion of the US Open.

Fitzpatrick made history as a result of this victory. He is now the second golfer to ever win both the US Open and the US Amateurs at the same venue since Jack Nicklaus did so at Pebble Beach in 1961 and 1972. That, and Fitzpatrick is the first person outside of the United States to win both the US Open and US Amateurs.

Zalatoris had the chance to be the fourth person to ever participate in a playoff in consecutive majors, joining Chris Dimarco, Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer, per ESPN’s Michael Eaves. At the PGA Championship in May, Zalatoris lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff.

If you wanted some drama, the 122nd US Open provided just that, and it saw Fitzpatrick walk away as the winner.
