The New York Mets recently signed ace Justin Verlander in place of Jacob deGrom, and they may be continuing the streak with Andrew Benintendi.
Their hot streak may continue as they’re now reportedly after Andrew Benintendi, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
New York seems to be anticipating Brandon Nimmo leaving, which is smart considering Nimmo has been meeting with other teams and there’s a very real chance he won’t return. The Mets underwent a lot of development to nearly clinch the NL East in 2022, so they must continue to look into their options to maximize their potential.
Benintendi is certainly a solid contender in the outfield, and it would be smart to invest in him regardless of whether or not Nimmo leaves.
Mets should aim to sign Andrew Benintendi no matter what
Even if Nimmo does stick around, Benintendi would bring a bit more depth into the roster that New York could certainly benefit from. They’d have extra security in case a player gets injured, and they wouldn’t have to scramble around to figure out a solution because they’d have solid players already on the roster.
He’s one of the best outfield options on the market, and the Mets should definitely utilize that while they can. He’s a Gold Glove defender, and his offensive stats aren’t all too bad, though he could definitely stand to hit with more power.
Over his seven-season career, he’s slashed .279/.351/.431 for an OPS of .782. He would definitely be on the better side of the Mets hitters, even though the Mets had one of the best lineups over the 2022 regular season.
Benintendi wouldn’t be the answer to all the pieces New York is addressing, but he’d certainly be a solid player for depth if Nimmo stays around.
