PFL 4: Twitter reacts to controversial Alex Martinez win over Clay Collard

MMA Twitter was highly split, if not highly outraged, at Alex Martinez getting the nod over Clay Collard at PFL 4

In what will go down as a highly controversial decision – and it’s not the first time such a thing has been said for a PFL fight – Alex Martinez pulled off an upset over Clay Collard in the main event of PFL 4.

As a result of the win, Martinez moves on to the PFL postseason and eliminates Collard.

Collard had a strong start to the fight, working over Martinez with several boxing combinations targeting Martinez’s body, clearly damaging him. Collard add in a couple of takedowns to the round, though Martinez ended the round on top.

That would be a foreshadow for what was to come. Despite Collard getting off to a hot start and knocking down Martinez in the second round, Martinez’s scrambling resulted in two submission attempts, including a rear-naked choke that looked deep and troubling but Collard managed to escape.

Martinez’s grappling and submission skills helped lead him to more success in the final frame, though Collard was still landing more damaging shots.

Both men entered this main event bout with three points in the lightweight standings and jockeying for position in the division’s postseason.

Collard scored an entertaining win over Jeremy Stephens at PFL 1 in April. Last season, Collard scored regular-season wins over Anthony Pettis and Joilton Lutterbach before losing to eventual champion Raush Manfio in the semifinals.

Martinez defeated Stevie Ray by decision at PFL 1. Last season, Martinez defeated Loik Radzhabov before losing to Natan Schulte. Martinez lost to Radzhabov in a rematch in the semifinals.
