Tyron Smith injury video: Cowboys and Dak Prescott should be concerned

Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith suffered an apparent knee injury during a recent practice.

The Dallas Cowboys are looking to repeat as NFC East champions, even though they have seen some big roster turnover. One of the big decisions was the team releasing tackle La’el Collins, only to watch him sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. The last thing the team needed was an injury to their offensive line.

During a practice on Aug. 24, left tackle Tyron Smith went down after shoving a defender, where he appeared to grab his left knee. You can view the moment Smith suffered the injury at this link.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Smith is likely to get an MRI on his left knee. Archer also pointed out that Smith “did not appear to be limping badly.”

The Cowboys will certainly be crossing their fingers that the injury for Smith is minor.

Throughout his career, Smith has proven to be one of the best left tackles in the NFL. That is evidenced by his two First-Team All-Pro nominations, his two Second-Team All-Pro nominations, and eight Pro Bowl appearances. He was considered one of Dallas’ best draft selections.

But in recent years, Smith has dealt with a variety of injuries. In 2020, he only played two games due to a neck injury. Last season, Smith dealt with ankle injuries that limited him to 11 games.

The Cowboys’ success will be contingent on the offensive line holding up. Dallas thrives on the running game, which will be lead by Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Not to mention, giving quarterback Dak Prescott time in the pocket has been crucial for the Cowboys, as he can stand in the pocket for an extended period of time and then move to the outside if need be to find an opening downfield.

With Collins no longer on the team, the last thing the Cowboys need heading into the season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is for Smith to be sidelined.

UPDATE: ESPN’s Todd Archer and Adam Schefter report that Smith suffered a torn left hamstring during the practice and that it could cause him to miss “multiple months of the 2022 season.”
