UFC 272: Rafael dos Anjos puts on a dominant performance in UFC return (Video)

Rafael dos Anjos puts on a dominant performance in UFC return.

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos put on a vintage performance against a tough Renato Moicano in the UFC 272 co-headliner.

Dos Anjos outstruck Moicano from start to finish in their five-round lightweight matchup. He overwhelmed the short-notice replacement Moicano in every facet of the fight.

Dos Anjos started to pull away in Round 3 after landing a head kick that badly wobbled Moicano. After landing some heavy ground-and-pound, the fight was nearly stopped by referee Marc Goddard.

But, Moicano proved to have the heart of a warrior over the last two rounds, opting to continue despite suffering from nasty cuts around his eyes.

After five rounds of action, Dos Anjos walked away with a convincing unanimous decision victory.

Rafael dos Anjos returns to the lightweight title picture

Dos Anjos was originally supposed to face Rafael Fiziev at UFC Vegas 48 before the event was pushed to the co-main event of UFC 272. Fiziev would then pull out of the fight after testing positive for COVID-19 just days before the scheduled bout.

Dos Anjos, a former UFC lightweight champion, hadn’t fought in the octagon since Nov. 2020. His last fight came against Paul Felder when he earned a split-decision win.

Before that, Dos Anjos had lost four of his previous five fights during a stint at welterweight.

After it was originally expected that Islam Makhachev would fight Dos Anjos, Moicano stepped up to take the fight after Makhachev allegedly turned it down. Moicano had previously earned back-to-back wins, including most recently against Alexander Hernandez at UFC 271.

With the victory over Moicano, Dos Anjos continues to move in the lightweight division and is in a great place to begin his 2022.
