UFC Orlando: Stephen Thompson stops Kevin Holland in wild encounter (Video)

Stephen Thompson and Kevin Holland traded all over the cage until Holland’s corner couldn’t take it anymore, giving “Wonderboy” the win in the UFC Orlando main event

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson came into UFC Orlando to show that he still had something left in the tank. He showed that and more, as he and Kevin Holland went toe-to-toe in a war that ended with Thompson’s hand raised in the evening’s featured bout.

With the win, Thompson, who entered No. 6 in the UFC welterweight rankings, snaps a two-fight losing skid and scores his first finish since February 2016 — when he stopped Johny Hendricks.

Both men started out the fight with wild movements around the cage, both throwing low and body kicks with a couple of clinches. Thompson landed a left that caught Holland’s attention before the two traded in the pocket. Holland landed a big knee and made Thompson eat a big right hand. Thompson threw another flurry of jabs and straights, but he was clearly busted up from one of Holland’s punches.

The second round opened with plenty of kicks from both men before some wild chasing around the Octagon. Thompson landed a left and looked to attack in close but Holland answered with a couple of knees in the clinch. Holland managed to score a takedown on Thompson but didn’t do much with it as the two briefly shared a laugh. Thompson appeared to go down from a punch near the cage by Holland, but he quickly got back up and chased down Holland. Thompson rocked Holland in the closing seconds with a right hand, but Holland answered to get him out of trouble.

After Thompson landed a switch kick early in the third, he continued to attack upstairs while Holland focused on low kicks. Holland scored another takedown, but he again simply let the fight get back to the feet — intending to have a striking match with the kickboxing fighter. Thompson landed a noteworthy sidekick to the face halfway through the round. Thompson presented a lot of forward pressure, particularly with about 90 seconds left as he continued to use his reach to his advantage and pressure Holland with another flurry of shots.

With Holland dealing with some sort of injury to his right hand, Thompson fired off some kicks to start the fourth round before some clinching. Thompson continued to land some vicious body kicks and stuffed a couple of Holland takedown attempts. The fight appeared to be over after a body shot, but the referee corrected himself and said it was a stoppage for a low blow. The fight resumed, but Holland still seemed to be worn down even after the pause in the action, as Holland continued his kicking-based offense. Holland continued to fire back, but it didn’t seem to be doing anything.

Holland finally went down in the closing seconds of the fourth, with Thompson trying to get a finish. While he didn’t get it in his attack, the Holland corner saw enough at the end of the round, giving Thompson a TKO win after four rounds.
