UFC Vegas 56: Alexander Volkov defeated Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
Alexander Volkov defeated Jairzinho Rozenstruik via TKO (strikes), Round 1 – 2:12 at UFC Vegas 56 on Saturday, June 4, 2022, live from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.
“I’m just very happy… Now, I’m waiting for my next fight… I’m ready for any challenges,” said Volkov, who stated he was looking to get back in the Octagon for another fight by September.
The fight opened with leg kicks from both fighters. Volkov clearly had a strategy of attacking Rozenstruik’s legs with kicks. Volkov lead with a jab and would then land an inside leg kick. Tired of being kicked, Rozenstruik unleashed a powerful combination. However, Volkov came right back with a powerful right hand that hurt Rozenstruik and sent his mouthguard flying. With Rozenstruik up against the fence, Volkov unloaded with a multi-punch combination that sent Rozenstruik down. Referee Herb Dean moved and stopped the fight.
Volkov entered Saturday’s main event as the UFC’s seventh-ranked heavyweight, one spot ahead of Rozenstruik. Saturday’s fight was the seventh main event for Volkov. In his last fight, Volkov was submitted by Tom Aspinall in the main event of March’s UFC London card. With his victory over Rozenstruik, Volkov will remain a key figure in the heavyweight division and will likely main event another card in the future.
Rozenstruik started his career with 10 straight victories. However, in his last five fights, Rozenstruik only won twice. In his previous fight, Curtis Blaydes defeated Rozenstruik by decision at UFC 266. Following his second straight loss, Rozenstruik will try and rebuild his contender status with a victory in his next week.
