When was the last time NC State beat Clemson? [Updated 2022]

No. 10 NC State hopes to expose No. 5 Clemson in the early stages of ACC play once again.

The biggest game of the weekend will take place at Clemson, as the No. 5 Tigers will host the No. 10 NC State Wolfpack in primetime.

These are the two crown jewels of the ACC this season. While the Tigers have been the preeminent power in the ACC throughout the College Football Playoff era under Dabo Swinney, Dave Doeren has a Wolfpack more ferocious than Alan Garner’s. If this game were being played in Raleigh, no doubt Zach Galifinakis would have let the dogs out as College GameDay‘s guest picker.

Pat McAfee has no idea what he is walking into, as the Textile Bowl is about to lay the smackdahn!

When was the last time NC State beat Clemson?

It might come as quite the shock for those not in the know, but NC State beat Clemson last year in double overtime in Raleigh, 27-21. Although the Wolfpack had already suffered a loss earlier in the season, it was their first win over the Tigers in a decade. This was Clemson’s second loss on the year, as they fell to Georgia. With that second defeat, the Tigers were knocked out of the playoff.

NC State vs. Clemson rivalry history

The Textile Bowl has been played annually since 1971, taking on that nickname in 1981. It is a friendly rivalry due to relative proximity in the Carolinas. The nickname has to do with both schools  being two of the largest textile universities in the country. Textiles have had a very important impact on the region for generations, so it is only fitting that this is the name of the rivalry game.

The Tigers and Wolfpack have played 89 times before on the gridiron, with Clemson having the upper hand with a 59-29-1 record. Prior to falling in Raleigh last year, Clemson was rocking a series best eight-game winning streak over the Wolfpack. Swinney has only lost this game twice since taking over the program. NC State has not won back-to-back since Philip Rivers played QB.

Whoever wins this game will be in the driver’s seat to win the ACC Atlantic and reach the playoff.
