2 arrested in shooting death of man found along East County road

A 43-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were arrested Tuesday in the shooting death of a man whose body was found along a rural East County road in January.

Adrian Carranza and Brandyce Marquez were jailed on suspicion of murder in the death of 59-year-old Ronald McKinney. Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Steffen said the three were acquaintances, but investigators were tight-lipped about other aspects of the case.

The arrests came a day after investigators served search warrants at Carranza’s home on Broadway in El Cajon and Marquez’s home on Conrad Avenue in Spring Valley. Steffen said “information gathered during the investigation” led to search warrants and arrests, but he did not elaborate.

Hikers found McKinney’s body off Millar Ranch Road near Echo Valley Road, in a sparsely populated unincorporated area just south of Rancho San Diego, around 7 a.m. on Jan. 23.

Investigators at the time said McKinney had suffered trauma but would not say how he was killed. On Wednesday, Steffen said McKinney suffered gunshot wounds.

The lieutenant declined to provide other details, saying the investigation was ongoing.

Carranza and Marquez remained in jail without bail Wednesday. Carranza was held at Central Jail in downtown San Diego and Marquez was held at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee.
