2 people shot in Gaslamp Quarter amid first summer weekend crowds

Police said two people were shot and wounded Friday night in the Gaslamp Quarter, which was crowded and bustling on the first weekend of summer.

The shooting occurred just after 10:30 p.m. during some kind of argument near Fifth Avenue and F Street, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. It was not immediately clear if the victims were part of the argument or bystanders.

At least one of the victims was reported to be a woman, Heims said. Paramedics took both victims to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

No information about the shooter was immediately available, Heims said.

The Gaslamp Quarter was teeming with activity Friday night, the first Friday of summer, with patrons crowding into busy restaurants and bars along Fifth Avenue and listening to at least two live outdoor music performances. The shooting happened less than an hour after nearly 39,000 fans left nearby Petco Park after watching the Padres close out a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated when more information is available.
