A 20-year-old motorcyclist died early Wednesday morning after crashing into the back of vehicle on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash happened about 12:35 a.m. on southbound I-5 north of Las Pulgas Road, CHP Officer Hunter Berger said in a news release.

The motorcyclist was headed south when he ran into the back of an empty horse trailer being towed by a Ford F-250 pickup truck, Berger said.

The 20-year-old died at the scene. His name has not been released yet, but Berger said the man was from the city of Lakewood, which borders Long Beach.

The Ford-250 was driven by a 29-year-old man from Aromas, a town near Monterey Bay.

All affected freeway lanes were reopened shortly after 2 a.m. Berger said it is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
