3.4 earthquake near Ocotillo Wells causes brief shaking in eastern San Diego County

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at a point six miles north-northeast of Ocotillo Wells in eastern San Diego County, producing brief, light shaking over a wide area, says the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor began 5.8 miles deep, along the San Jacinto fault system — one of the most active faults in Southern California. Seismologists say that quakes of this size are common in the region and rarely lead to a larger event.
