Newport Harbor’s Ben Liechty and Peter Castillo built a strong connection the past two seasons leading the Sailors to consecutive CIF-SS Open Division titles in boys water polo.

On Monday, their bond extended to the CIF-SS awards.

Liechty and Castillo were named co-players of the year for the Open Division, highlighting Orange County selections on the All-CIF teams.

The teams were picked by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches’ Association.

Liechty, a senior attacker, and Castillo, a junior center, helped lead Newport Harbor to its second consecutive Open Division crown with a 10-9 victory against JSerra in the finals in November.

It was record 14th top division title for the Sailors.

As a junior, the UCLA-committed Liechty was selected Open Division player of year and The Register’s Orange County player of the year after helping the Sailors claim their first Open Division crown.

Newport Harbor’s Ross Sinclair was selected coach of the year in the Open Division for the second consecutive fall.

Orange Lutheran senior Jonathan Carcarey was voted the Division 1 player of the year. The Pepperdine-committed attacker helped power the Lancers to the Division 1 title with an 11-7 victory against Foothill in the finals.
