Angel City FC in early tight race in NWSL standings

Last week, Angel City FC coach Freya Coombe was asked if she’s taking a look at the standings around the NWSL.

With the halfway mark of the 22-game season slowly approaching, Coombe admitted to not looking at how things are stacking up.

“For us, it’s very much a focus on the game-by-game and focusing on the performances, rather than the outcomes,” Coombe said. “I still think we’re growing. I think once we put in good performances, the outcomes generally go with it.

“For us, it’s about focusing on that process and trying to get that momentum by focusing game-by-game … I think it’s very early to look at the table. Everything is so close and you can see one-game difference of getting three points can move you six or seven places up the table … I think it’s very early, but we’re coming into a key period of the season, especially with the international break that will shake things out going into the final part of the season.”

Angel City’s move received a big boost last week with its 3-2 road win over Racing Louisville FC. Angel CIty (4-3-1) enters this week tied for third with the Portland Thorns at 13 points, just two behind first-place San Diego and Chicago (15 points). A big road game is on tap Saturday as Angel City visits OL Reign (7 p.m.) at Lumen Field in Seattle. The game will air on the NWSL’s Twitch channel (https://www.twitch.tv/nwslofficial).

Angel City’s push will be hindered a bit with the loss last week of forward Christen Press due to an ACL injury.

“Christen has been playing very well so there’s big shoes to fill,” Coombe said. “But we have a great team and we’re just rolling up our sleeves and getting on with it.”

This will be Angel City’s first regular-season meeting against OL Reign (2-2-4, 10 points). The teams met twice in the Challenge Cup, with the Reign winning 3-1 and 2-1.

Claire Emsile on her way

Angel City will be adding forward Claire Emsile in the next couple of weeks as her VISA process finalizes.

Angel City selected Emsile’s playing rights in the expansion draft. She recently completed the season with Everton in the English FA Women’s Super League. Her contract with Everton ends at the end of the month.
