Angel City FC settles for scoreless draw with Houston

LOS ANGELES — Angel City Football Club snapped its two-game losing skid but walked off the field Tuesday night feeling a bit empty.

Despite several good chances on goal in the second half, Angel City (3-3-1, 10 points) never found the back of the net, a recurring problem, and had to settle for a scoreless draw against the Houston Dash in front of 16,739 at Banc of California Stadium.

In its seven games this season, Angel City has scored just four goals and one was an own goal.

Angel City had suffered consecutive shutout losses to NJ/NY Gotham FC (1-0) and Portland (3-0). This was the first two-game losing skid for the club.

Houston entered off of a five-goal outing last week against the Orlando Pride.

Angel City’s two best chances on goal came in the same sequence in the second half. In the 69th minute, Clarisse Le Bihan found Jun Endo in space just inside the 18-yard box. Endo’s shot was saved by Houston’s Jane Campbell. The rebound came off perfectly to Christen Press, but her shot was deflected by Campbell, ending the threat.

Houston’s first real chance on goal was in the second half as Marisa Viggiano got a toe-poke shot that hit the crossbar in the 64th minute. Angel City managed to clear the ball away.

Houston’s Shea Groom also hit the crossbar later in the second half.

This was the fourth consecutive game that an Angel City player has failed to score. Angel City defeated Kansas City on May 21 on an own-goal. The last goal scored by an Angel City player came in a May 15 victory over the Washington Spirit (1-0).

Although it didn’t score, Angel City’s defensive effort was up to the task again. Houston erupted for five goals last week against the Orlando Pride.

Aside from a long-distance shot from Sophie Schmidt from approximately 20 yards out, that was goalkeeper DiDi Haracic went airborne to get her hands on, the Dash never really threatened during the first half.

Angel City will be back on the field in four days when it travels to face Racing Louisville FC (Saturday, 5 p.m.). It will be the first meeting between the two teams.
