Bicyclist hit by ice cream truck, killed in San Marcos intersection

A 26-year-old man died Wednesday night when he was hit on his bicycle by an ice cream truck at a San Marcos intersection, sheriff’s officials said.

The truck collided with the bicycle at the intersection of Pico Avenue and West Mission Road shortly after 8 p.m. A witness told deputies the truck’s driver was turning west onto West Mission on a green light and struck the bicyclist, who was traveling southwest across the intersection against a red light.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. He died at the scene before he could be taken to a hospital, officials said. His name was not released.

The 63-year-old driver of the ice cream truck was uninjured.

A news release from the Sheriff’s Department said alcohol was believed to be a factor in the collision but it did not specify if the suspected alcohol use involved the bicyclist or the truck driver. The news release said no arrests had been made and the investigation is ongoing.
