Boys basketball roundup: Mater Dei needs big rally to beat Santa Margarita in Trinity League showdown

The Mater Dei boys basketball team overcame a 13-point halftime Thursday to beat second-place Santa Margarita 61-58 at Mater Dei High, giving the Monarchs a commanding lead in the Trinity League championship race.

The Monarchs (21-2, 6-0) have a two-game lead over Santa Margarita (17-2, 6-2). Both of the Eagles’ losses have been to Mater Dei.

Mater Dei trailed 31-18 at halftime, but rallied in the second half behind Zack Davidson, who had a team-high 22 points, and Gabriel Quiette, who filled the stat sheet with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kaden Minter added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Four Santa Margarita players scored in double figures with Jake Heberle leading the way with 13. Kyle Evans and Cameron Mercadel each added 12 points.

Mater Dei will host Servite on Friday. Santa Margarita will play a nonleague road game against Escondido on Saturday.

Also in the Trinity League:

JSerra 58, Servite 44: JSerra snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Servite at JSerra High.

Robert Diaz paced JSerra (13-8, 3-5) with 15 points. Josh Ragsdale and Dane Persek had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Tyler Small had a game-high 17 points for Servite (12-8, 0-7). Junior Davyn Roberts had 12 points for the Friars.

JSerra will play a nonleague game against Marina on Saturday.

In the San Joaquin League:

Fairmont Prep 94, Capistrano Valley Christian 85: Fairmont Prep clinched a share of the San Joaquin League championship with a high-scoring win over Capistrano Valley Christian at Fairmont Prep.

The Huskies (14-6, 6-1), ranked No. 5 in Orange County, have a one game lead over No. 6 CVC with one league game remaining.

Fairmont Prep will play last-place Fairmont of San Juan Capistrano on Thursday, Feb. 3.

Kristian Jemerson led the Huskies with 24 points and Chol Deng had 19. Myles Che and Collins Acheampong had 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Makaih Williams led CVC (15-6, 3-2) with 22 points. Mac West had 17 points and 13 rebounds. Eli Arthurton made four 3-point attempts and had 13 points.

The Eagles will play a nonleague road game against Rolling Hills Prep on Friday before playing two consecutive league games against St. Margaret’s.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 54, Tustin 39: After suffering a narrow loss to the Tillers last week, Cypress pulled out a decisive victory in the rematch at Cypress High.

Cypress (12-12, 4-3) sits in third place in the Empire League. The Centurions are one game behind Tustin, which still has a game remaining against league leader Crean Lutheran.

Sophomore Jonah Kim led Cypress with 17 points and Kody Papke added 13.

Cypress will host Pacifica on Friday. The Centurions beat Pacifica 55-39 on Jan. 11.

Tustin (18-7, 5-2) will play Crean Lutheran on the road Friday. Crean Lutheran will clinch the outright league championship with a win.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 66, Savanna 45: Anaheim cruised to a win over visiting Savanna in a game that is critical for the league standings.

The Colonists (12-14, 5-3) are tied with Savanna (8-12, 5-3) for second place in the Orange League. Savanna had edged Anaheim 55-54 on Monday.

Isaiah Bourgoin led Anaheim with 17 points. Lorenzo Castillo had 12 points and Jaeko Java added 10.

Western 52, Santa Ana Valley 20: Western clinched a share of the Orange League championship with a blowout win over visiting Santa Ana Valley.
