A woman who watched her boyfriend brutally murder six members of his own family, including two children, at their Chicago home and then helped him rob the victims was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison.
Jafeth Ramos, 25, pleaded guilty to armed robbery as part of a deal with Cook County prosecutors in which she agreed to testify against her former boyfriend, Diego Uribe Cruz.
Uribe Cruz was sentenced to life in prison last month after being convicted of six counts of first-degree murder for the Feb. 2016 killings in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood.
At Uribe Cruz’s trial, Ramos told jurors that she accepted the plea deal in the hope that she one day would be able to again be with her son, who was a baby when the couple was arrested in May 2016, reported Chicago Sun-Times.
Prosecutors alleged that Uribe Cruz shot his 32-year-old aunt, Maria Martinez, after trying to rob her on Feb. 4, 2016. He then beat to death the woman’s brother, 38-year-old Noe Martinez Jr, and stabbed the siblings’ 58-year-old mother, Rosaura Martinez, after kicking her down a flight of stairs.
Ramos recalled Rosaura asking Uribe Cruz: “why are you slicing my throat?”
In the course of the frenzied attack, Uribe Cruz forced his aunt’s two sons, 10-year-old Alexis Cruz and 13-year-old Leonardo Cruz, to collect valuables from the home for him before he stabbed both boys to death.
Ramos told the court that before he was killed, the older boy begged Uribe Cruz for mercy, telling him, “I just want to live,” reported NBC Chicago.
According to Ramos’ testimony, she and her boyfriend stayed at the home to await the return of Uribe Cruz’s uncle, 62-year-old Noe Martinez Sr., who was away getting food while the rest of his family was being slaughtered.
As soon as Martinez Sr. entered the bungalow, Uribe Cruz killed him as well.
Ramos admitted she did not try to leave or call for help. The couple later fled the scene with their loot, which included $250, some jewelry, an Xbox game console and a piggy bank.
Uribe Cruz’s attorneys said during his trial he could not have killed all six people by himself. They suggested he was present when the family was killed in a robbery by four masked men.
