Computers 2 Kids schedules Sept. 17 event

Low-cost laptop and desktop computers will be made available to families for as little as $100 at a drive-thru event organized by the San Diego County Office of Education and the nonprofit Computers 2 Kids.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 17 at the county office’s campus, 6401 Linda Vista Road, San Diego. Debit and credit cards are acceptable ($2 processing fee for credit cards), as is cash. The computers will come already loaded with software, and the program includes free technical support.

Clients will be charged an administrative fee of $100 for a desktop system, $100 for a Yoga Laptop, or $150 for a Core processor laptop.

To reserve a computer, customers must register by Sept. 10 at bit.ly/3TeohCi. Walk-ups will be accommodated if possible.

“This is a great partnership that helps SDCOE in its ongoing equity work to make sure every student has the opportunity and access to thrive,” said Paul Gothold, San Diego County superintendent of schools, in a statement.

Besides having Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2019 installed, each computer will have antivirus and education-related software. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for Internet access.

The county Office of Education and Computers 2 Kids has distributed computers to thousands of low-income families since 2004. The partnership is helping reduce the digital divide between those who have access to technology and those who don’t.

Computers 2 Kids refurbishes donated computer systems to place with low-income families, and also runs an electronics recycling program. Drop off donations from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and until 3 p.m. Saturdays at the C2K warehouse at 8324 Miramar Mall, San Diego. The organization takes all working and nonworking electronics, including computers, laptops, monitors (any size), keyboards, mice, cords, printers, copiers and fax machines, scanners, routers and switches, TVs and stereos.

Corporate donors with large amounts of electronics can contact Twyla Perry at (858) 200-9791 or [email protected] to schedule a pickup.
