The OC Health Care Agency reported 6,532 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, Jan. 20, increasing the cumulative total since tracking began in the county to 466,107.
The county has had about 91,247 new cases in the last two weeks.
On Thursday, 1,183 people were reported hospitalized with COVID-19 in Orange County, including 199 patients in intensive care units. That’s an decrease of 49 people hospitalized from Wednesday.
A year ago on Jan. 20, Orange County had 1,935 people hospitalized with the coronavirus. The peak was Jan. 7, with 2,259 patients.
Case rate by vaccination status
The county’s COVID-19 dashboard’s seven-day rate of new cases per 100,000 residents by vaccination status (as of Jan. 15) shows the following:
- Not fully vaccinated: 234.1 cases per 100,000 people, down from 290.1 the previous week.
- Fully vaccinated but no booster: 162.1 cases per 100,000 people, down from 220.4 the previous week.
- Fully vaccinated with booster: 73.5 cases per 100,000 people down from 91.9 the previous week.

The Orange County COVID-19 Dashboard updates the percentage of those hospitalized by vaccination status on Thursdays, and, this week 85% of those hospitalized are unvaccinated. This is a decrease of 1% from a week ago. Of those in ICUs with the coronavirus, 87% are unvaccinated.
The county reported five more deaths as of Thursday, increasing the count of those who have died from the virus in Orange County to 5,946.
The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Jan. 9.
Of the 5,946 deaths reported from the virus, 1,225 were skilled nursing facility residents, 647 were in assisted living facilities, two were O.C. jail inmates and 19 were listed as homeless.
It is estimated 323,606 people have recovered from the virus. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.
Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
