Debris field from possible plane crash found in remote area near Jamul

Debris from a possible plane crash was located by a sheriff’s helicopter in rocky terrain near Jamul Tuesday afternoon, and emergency crews are trying to get to the area to check it out, a sheriff’s official said.

Someone called 911 around 12:40 p.m. to report seeing what looked like a plane falling out of the sky in the Jamul area.

It took a while for deputies to find evidence that something had crashed. No planes were reported missing and there were no immediate reports of pilots having engine problems in the area.

Sheriff’s deputies in patrol cars searched the area, while a sheriff’s helicopter was dispatched to check around. Initially nothing was found, said sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Wisniewski

Then a helicopter pilot spotted “a debris field” on a granite-filled mountain known as Lyons Peak, off Lyon Peaks Road in the Jamul area, Wisniewski said.

The FAA has been notified, he added.

No further information was immediately available.
