Detectives ask for public’s help in solving southeastern San Diego shooting death

San Diego homicide detectives are asking for the public’s help in solving the shooting death of a 44-year-old man who was gunned down in a parked car in southeastern San Diego Friday night.

Gilbert Johnson was killed while sitting in a vehicle near Varney Drive and Leaf Terrace Court at 7:42 p.m., police said. The street is in the community of Alta Vista, which is south of the Valencia and Encanto neighborhoods.

Investigators say Johnson was talking with an acquaintance when a white older model BMW sedan pulled up near him.

An unknown man in dark clothing exited the BMW and opened fire, police said. Johnson was struck at least once.

The shooter fled the scene west on Varney Drive, police said.

Officers found Johnson was found slumped over in his vehicle, police said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

A $1,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to an arrest, authorities said Tuesday.
