A 29-year-old man died Friday afternoon after crashing into a traffic light pole in San Diego’s Mountain View neighborhood, police said.
The solo crash happened a few minutes before 5 p.m. as the man was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima on South 47th Street where the roadway passes under Interstate 805 and several of the freeway’s entrance and exit ramps, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said in a news release.
For unknown reasons, the driver left the roadway and his sedan slammed into a metal traffic light pole off the right side of the street, Heims said. San Diego firefighters attempted to save the injured driver, but he died at the scene.
The Police Department’s traffic division is investigating the crash, Heims said. Investigators did not know Friday whether drug or alcohol impairment may have played a role in the incident.
