Driver arrested after police chase stolen SUV from Gaslamp Quarter to El Cajon

A driver in a stolen SUV was arrested Thursday morning after a pursuit from San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter to El Cajon, police said.

San Diego police officers came across the 2014 Jeep Liberty, parked in the area of Second Avenue and J Street, about 5:30 a.m. They ran the license plate in a database and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen. They also spotted a woman and a man in the vehicle, said Officer David O’Brien.

When officers tried to detain the pair, the driver started the Jeep and took off, O’Brien said. Officers tried to pull over the driver, but she did not stop.

As officers gave chase, the driver traveled through East Village and went onto west state Route 94, then north Interstate 15 and then east Interstate 8, O’Brien said.

About 6:10 a.m., the driver stopped on I-8 near Greenfield Drive, then ran across freeway lanes. Officers ran after her, took her to the ground and took her into custody, O’Brien said. They also detained the passenger.

Further information about the pair, the stolen vehicle or the pursuit was not immediately available.
