Driver arrested in fatal collision that killed 20-year-old pedestrian in El Cajon

A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs Wednesday night after allegedly driving onto a sidewalk and striking a 20-year-old pedestrian who later died, police said.

Officers found the woman lying on North Second Street near the on-ramp to Interstate 8 around 8:50 p.m. She was taken to a hospital, where she died, police said.

Police believe the victim was standing near a crosswalk when a driver in a silver Hyundai Sonata heading north in the right lane drove onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrian.

The 22-year-old motorist continued driving north, colliding with a traffic signal light and a street sign. After traveling a short distance, the driver turned east onto Naranca Avenue, police said.

Someone called 911 to report the Sonata had stopped in the middle of the road. The vehicle had front end damage and a traffic signal light was hanging from the car.

Police determined the driver was under the influence of a narcotic at the time of the collision. He was arrested and later booked into the San Diego County Jail on multiple charges, police said. His name was not immediately released.

The name of the victim wasn’t released pending notification of her next of kin.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call them at (619) 579-3311.
