Driver hit, killed on I-5 after getting out of vehicle in Old Town area

A motorist involved in a rollover crash Sunday night on Interstate 5 in the Old Town area got out of his or her vehicle and was fatally struck by another vehicle, authorities said.

The initial crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-5 near Interstate 8 shortly after 9 p.m. The driver who was involved in the apparent single-vehicle crash exited the vehicle and was struck and thrown onto the northbound side of I-5 near the center divider, said California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe.

The vehicle that struck the driver stopped and remained at the scene, he said.

The driver who was hit died before he or she could be taken to a hospital.

Several lanes were closed as the crash was investigated. All lanes reopened just after 10:45 p.m. No other information was immediately available.
