El Cajon driver seriously injured after car overturns while trying to elude CHP

An El Cajon man suffered major injuries after he crashed Sunday morning while trying to elude a California Highway Patrol officer, who was chasing him for alleged speeding, authorities said.

A CHP sergeant who was monitoring freeway speeds on eastbound state Route 52 near Mission Gorge Road spotted the speeding black Mercedes drive past him around 7:50 a.m., CHP Lt. Brian Gonsalves told OnScene TV.

The 59-year-old driver accelerated to speeds of over 100 mph as the officer tried to pull him over, Gonsalves said.

The chase continued south on state Route 67, then west on Interstate 8, according to Gonsalves. The speeding driver exited at West Main Street in El Cajon. He was traveling down the exit ramp when he lost control of his car, which overturned onto the shoulder.

The man suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital, Gonsalves said.

Authorities suspect alcohol may have been a factor, he added.
