Escondido police shoot man after earlier shooting, vehicle pursuit

At least one police officer shot a man Friday evening in Escondido after a vehicle pursuit linked to a shooting earlier in the evening within the city, police said.

Paramedics took the man who was shot by police to a hospital, Escondido police Sgt. Jeff Valdivia said. The man’s condition — he reportedly had a head wound — was unknown.

The police shooting occurred about 6:20 p.m. near Bear Valley Parkway and Encino Drive, Valdivia said. A short time earlier, officers had spotted a vehicle believed to be associated with the earlier shooting.

The officers chased that vehicle and shot a man after the pursuit ended, Valdivia said. No other information about the pursuit or the shooting was immediately available.

The earlier shooting occurred in the area of a Walmart near East Grand Avenue, East Valley Parkway and North Ash Street, Valdivia said. The sergeant wasn’t sure of the exact time the shooting occurred, but said he believed it happened a few hours before the police shooting.

Friday night’s shooting was the second involving Escondido police this year. On April 21, Officer Chad Moore shot and killed 59-year-old Steven John Olson, who was walking toward him with a crowbar.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
