A vehicle fire reportedly sparked a brush fire in an open field in Otay Mesa on Wednesday afternoon, burning at least 10 acres, Cal Fire officials said.
The fire was reported about 5:15 p.m. in the area of Lonestar and Harvest roads, not far from state Route 125 and the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility.
The flames took off quickly as firefighters in the air and on the ground worked to gain the upper hand, officials said. Two air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters were sent to help firefighters on the ground.
“They’re making good progress,” Cal Fire Capt. Niel Czapinski said a little more than an hour after the fire started. He added that the fire was not growing much but crews had not yet stopped its spread.
Officials said there were no immediate impacts, such as evacuations, to the nearby prison or commercial warehouses in the area.
No further information was immediately available.
