Hispanic Chambers of Commerce holds annual convention in downtown Oakland

OAKLAND — The California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce is holding its annual convention in downtown Oakland, the statewide organization’s first full-scale gathering in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The meeting is being held at the Oakland Marriott City Center hotel, a landmark lodging in the East Bay city’s downtown district. The gathering began on Thursday and was scheduled to continue through Saturday, Aug. 13.

“Oakland is such a vibrant and energetic city with a wonderfully diverse population and an array of many cultures,” said Julian Canete, president and chief executive officer of the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.

The gathering will provide an opportunity for Hispanic business owners and leaders to take stock of how they are coping with the aftermath of the coronavirus and the COVID-linked dislocations that still haunt the economy.

The California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Annual Statewide Convention is the largest gathering for Hispanic-owned businesses in the Western region of the United States, according to the organization.

“The 2022 Convention Theme is ‘BE ALL IN’ highlighting the tenacity, dedication, grit, and perseverance of our diverse small business owners and their outlook in pursuing their dreams and ambitions,” the statewide chamber organization said in a post on its website.

More than 1,500 Hispanic business owners and attendees were slated to attend the annual gathering in downtown Oakland.

“Members will be here from over 120 chambers of commerce and associations across the state with the intent of networking, seeking business opportunities, and discovering business strategies to survive and thrive in a post-pandemic world,” Canete said.

The organization represents the interests of 815,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in California, the group said.

“The convention is expected to provide the Oakland community with a substantial economic boost,” the group stated on its website.

The hotel itself is in the heart of downtown Oakland, which also means the convention headquarters is close to the bustling and trendy Uptown district that features an array of restaurants, nightclubs, entertainment hubs and live-performance sites.

“Our members are excited about visiting Oakland and enjoying its fantastic culinary scene, arts, music, attractions and all the city has to offer,” Canete said.
