JSerra vs. Villa Park rematch among Tuesday’s CIF-SS baseball semifinals

It will be a rematch Tuesday when JSerra plays at Villa Park in one of the Division 1 semifinals of the CIF Southern Section baseball playoffs.

Villa Park (25-4) hammered JSerra 11-3 in the Boras Classic South tournament championship game April 22. Britton Beeson homered, doubled and drove in five runs for the Spartans.

“I don’t take too much stock in a regular-season game,” said Villa Park coach Burt Call. “Yes, that gives us some familiarity with them. But that was Day 4 of the Boras, so their pitching is going to be different this time around.”

Call is referring to how starting pitching usually is set up for a four-day tournament like the Boras Classic South. Coaches generally assign their top two pitchers to the first two games because a team must win those games to advance to a semifinal or final.

JSerra (21-10) has excellent pitching depth, but even the Lions experience a drop in quality when going to their staff’s Nos. 3 and 4 starting pitchers.

Call said he won’t change Villa Park’s approach to Tuesday’s 3:15 p.m. game.

“Like any playoff game,” he said, “you try to make sure your pitcher is dialed in and that you did your homework so he can pitch effectively and put the team in position to win the game.”

In other semifinals Tuesday:

Division 1, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks at Huntington Beach, 3:15 p.m. Huntington Beach (22-8) has scored 25 runs over its two Division 1 playoff wins. After a first-round bye the Oilers thumped Bishop Amat 13-0 in the second round and Foothill 12-5 in the quarterfinals. Notre Dame (23-7-1) defeated top-seeded Orange Lutheran 5-4 in eight innings in the quarterfinals.

Division 3, Oaks Christian at Newport Harbor, 3:15 p.m. Newport Harbor (19-11) has outscored its three playoff opponents 19-5 on its way to the semifinals. Jackson Gilles homered and Joey Wright drove in three runs in the Sailors’ 7-3 win over Downey in the quarterfinals.

Division 4, El Modena at Tesoro, 3:30 p.m. Pitching and defense have been the key to El Modena (20-9-1) reaching the semifinals. The Vanguards have pitched two shutouts and given up only one run over three playoff wins. For Tesoro (21-8), Coleton Dahl pitched seven scoreless innings in the Titans’ nine-inning, 1-0 win over Valencia of Valencia in the quarterfinals.

Division 4, Fullerton at Aquinas, 3:15 p.m. Fullerton (22-6) scored 30 runs over its three playoff wins to reach the semifinals. Sebastian Fany and Kyle Kim had three RBIs each in a 14-9 win over Santiago of Corona in the quarterfinals. Aquinas (28-2) is the No. 1 seed in Division 4.

Division 5, Burroughs of Burbank at Tustin: Senior right-hander Riley Kelly was great again for the Tillers (20-10) in a 2-0 win over Temple City in the quarterfinals. Kelly has signed with UC Irvine.

Division 6, Bellflower at Anaheim, 3:15 p.m. Anaheim senior right-hander Jillian Albayati pitched a complete game for the Colonists (20-9-1) in their 9-1 win over Whittier Christian in the quarterfinals. “She has a fastball, a slider and a changeup,” said Anaheim coach Mike Barrera. “She’s really consistent, she can throw all of her pitches for strikes and she’s hitting her spots.”
