Man, 21, pleads guilty to manslaughter in Mount Hope shooting, dragging death

A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday to a manslaughter charge in the death of a man who was shot in Mount Hope and then dragged by a car last year.

Fernando Arellano pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of San Diego resident David Aviles, 56, who police found pinned beneath a car on F Street near 41st Street around 8:15 p.m. June 20, 2021.

Arellano is expected to be sentenced to just over 23 years in state prison for Aviles’ death, as well as the attempted murder of an unidentified second person, which prosecutors say also happened on June 20.

Investigators learned that Aviles got into a fight with the occupants of a dark-colored Honda that night, said San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown.

Aviles was shot and dragged by the Honda, Brown said. He died at the scene.

Arellano was arrested about six months later in Tecate, Mexico.

His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 23 in San Diego Superior Court.
