Man, 27, arrested, accused of assault at Mira Mesa church

A 27-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape after police say he attacked a woman in a church in Mira Mesa.

The attack occurred about noon Friday at a church on Rickert Road near Mira Mesa Boulevard, according to San Diego police Lt. Adam Sharki.

Police said the San Diego man knocked on the door of the church where the woman was alone inside. He asked to use the restroom.

She allowed him inside the church, and he stayed for several minutes. She asked the man to leave but he refused, Sharki said.

The man then pulled the woman inside of a room and attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

She fought him off and escaped, police said. He left the church.

Police identified and arrested a suspect about 1 p.m. on Westview Parkway near Mira Mesa Boulevard — less than a mile away from the church.

The man was booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape and elder abuse.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call the San Diego Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit at (619) 531-2210 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
