Man struck, killed on state Route 94 in Lemon Grove identified

Authorities have identified a 26-year-old man who was struck by a car and killed last month after being involved in a collision on eastbound state Route 94 in Lemon Grove.

Emmanuel Elizalde, of San Diego, was hit and killed about 2:40 a.m. on July 17, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office, which said Elizalde had been walking in the left shoulder. The CHP previously said the man had been standing in the fast lane.

About 10 minutes earlier, Elizalde was involved in a collision with another car that resulted in damage to at least one of the vehicles, the CHP said. After that initial crash, Elizalde parked his car along the shoulder and fast lane, according the Medical Examiner’s Office.

A 27-year-old man headed east in a 2013 Hyundai struck Elizalde, according to the CHP. The driver had swerved to avoid hitting Elizalde’s car and instead struck Elizalde, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Elizalde died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The Hyundai driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. As of Tuesday, the investigation was ongoing and no charges had been filed, CHP Officer Travis Garrow said.
