Man suspected in downtown San Diego stabbing arrested in University City

A man was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of stabbing another man in an unprovoked attack at a downtown San Diego trolley station, police said.

The incident happened about 4:30 a.m. at the trolley station on C Street near Third Avenue.

Police said the victim, a 70-year-old man, was standing on the platform when a young man stabbed him in the abdomen with an unknown weapon.

“There was no altercation between the victim and suspect prior to the stabbing,” San Diego police Officer David O’Brien wrote in an incident log.

The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

The attack was caught on video and, sometime later, a San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officer called San Diego police to report the suspect was on a trolley headed to University City, police said. Officers in the area responded to the one of the stations there and took the man into custody.

The exact location of the arrest and the age of the suspect were not immediately available.
