Firefighters rescued a trapped, seriously injured man Tuesday night following a crash between a pickup and semi in Otay Mesa, authorities said.
The collision sent the pickup crashing into a building about 7:50 p.m. on Avenida de la Fuente and Avenida Costa del Sol, according to San Diego police Officer John Buttle. The exact circumstances of the crash, which occurred about a block east of La Media Road, were not immediately known.
The semi was hauling a loaded tractor trailer when it collided with the pickup, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief Chris Babler told OnScene TV. A man inside the truck suffered serious injuries, and rescuing him required fire crews to perform a “complex auto extrication.”
Paramedics airlifted that man to a hospital for treatment, according to Buttle and Babler. His name, age and the extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
The crash knocked down a light pole, Buttle said. It also caused a significant diesel fuel leak that required a Fire-Rescue Department hazardous materials team to help clean up, Babler told OnScene TV.
The extent of the damage to the building that was struck was not unknown Tuesday night. No other details about the crash were immediately available.
