A man walking on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley was killed when he was struck by multiple vehicles late Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.
He was struck about 11:20 p.m. while walking in lanes on the westbound side of the freeway west of Mission Center Road, CHP Officer Jesse Matias said.
He was first hit by a Nissan pickup truck driven by a 71-year-old man, then hit by what Matias said was an “unknown number of other vehicles.” The pedestrian died at the scene. His name was withheld from release pending his family’s notification of his death.
The pickup driver stayed at the scene. Some lanes were closed for five hours as officers investigated and collected evidence.
The driver was not hurt, and investigators do not suspect he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Matias said.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will run toxicology tests to determine if the man who was struck was intoxicated by drugs or alcohol at the time of this death.
