A standoff that started after a man barricaded himself in a Carlsbad home with a child ended peacefully Saturday when the suspect surrendered, police said.
Just before 7 a.m. Saturday, officers went to a house on Clearwater Street near Sandside Court to check on a man who had reportedly locked himself in a bedroom with his 2-year-old child, Carlsbad police Lt. Darbie Ernst said. The man refused to communicate or leave the room.
Police believed the man had a gun, and a SWAT team and crisis negotiators were summoned to the home.
After about four hours, the man came outside and was taken into custody without incident, Ernst said. The child was found unharmed.
A firearm was located inside the residence, but it was not used during the incident, according to police.
Ernst said the man was arrested on several charges including making criminal threats, delaying an officer and having an unregistered firearm.
