Marina ends season with rout of Segerstrom, repeats as league champions

SANTA ANA – With no postseason this year, the Marina High football team had no chance to repeat as CIF-SS champions.

But it still had a league title to defend.

The Vikings began their game against Segerstrom on Friday with 35 unanswered points and cruised to a 41-7 victory over their hosts to repeat as Big 4 League champions.

It was another highlight for the team’s seniors, who leave with two league championships and a CIF title after starting their high school careers with consecutive 3-7 records.

“This is a very gifted group of seniors,” Marina coach Jeff Turley said. “It’s been a tough year. It’s a great way to go out. They came in here really motivated. They came in very determined to finish this out to be back-to-back champs and walk out of here as winners.”

Brantt Riederich scored the games first touchdown for Marina (4-1) on a 10-yard run. It was the first of five consecutive touchdowns the Vikings, including a 65-yard touchdown run by Riederich to make it 35-0.

Riederich rushed for 181 yards and two TDs on 15 carries and also caught three passes for 50 yards.

“He’s not the biggest guy on the field, but he sure can run,” Marina quarterback Jack Miller said. “You give him a bit of space and he’s going to take it for seven.”

Segerstrom (2-1) finally responded to the Vikings’ scoring blitz with an 86-yard kick return touchdown by Allan Serrano, which was followed by a 66-yard kick return touchdown by Marina’s Luke Lastra.

Miller completed 15 of 24 passes for 227 yards with three touchdowns. Gavin Dykema caught four passes for 61 yards and a touchdown while Dane Brenton caught two passes for 29 yards and two TDs.

“We had a majority senior-loaded offense and defense,” Riederich said. “We had a fire lit on our rear. It was a lot of ours’ last games and I think that really pushed us to give it our all tonight with nothing to lose.”

Segerstrom couldn’t get its offense going and was forced to punt seven times.

Jonathan Mota led the Jaguars with 82 yards on 14 carries while Markos Correa led Segerstrom with nine tackles.

Wyatt McClour caught four passes for 61 yards for Marina while also having a game-high 10 tackles. Micah Asato came away two sacks for the Vikings.

“This feels great,” Miller said. “Going out with a win. Back-to-back league champs, couldn’t have asked for a greater season.”
