Motorcycle rider dies after high speed crash in Carlsbad

A motorcycle rider died of burn injuries after he lost control and crashed on Carlsbad Boulevard Saturday afternoon, Carlsbad police said.

The 24-year-old man was traveling north on Carlsbad Boulevard when the accident occurred, police said in a statement. They estimated he was traveling at more than 90 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Police responded at 2:37 p.m. and found the rider had been burned in the collision. He was transported by air ambulance to UCSD Burn Center, but later died from his injuries, police said.

The collision caused the motorcycle gas tank to dislodge and start a fire in nearby vegetation, so the Carlsbad Fire Department was called to extinguish it.

Police said they are investigating the accident, and did not release the identity of the rider.
