One dead, at least three injured in Gaslamp Quarter shooting; one person detained

A shooting left one person dead and as many as four others wounded Thursday night in the Gaslamp Quarter, authorities said.

Officers detained one person and reportedly recovered a firearm, and the scene was not thought to be active as of 11 p.m., San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.

The gunfire erupted around 10:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue and J Street, and possibly “a few other locations” along Fifth Avenue, according to Buttle, who said officers and investigators were still sorting out what happened.

One person died at the scene, while medics took three others to hospitals, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief Jeff Mitchell said. A fourth injured person was treated and released at the scene, though it was unclear if that person suffered a gunshot wound.

According to police dispatch traffic, the victim who died was shot at Fifth Avenue and J Street, three others were shot near 5th and Island avenues, and the suspected shooter was taken into custody after running to Fifth and G Street.

No other details were immediately available.
