Orange Lutheran’s girls basketball team finished a challenging week Saturday by showing its resolve.
The Lancers, ranked fifth in Orange County, closed the third quarter with a 13-0 run en route to a 48-32 victory against No. 14 Brea Olinda in a clash of Division 2AA contenders at the Matson Classic at Orange Lutheran.
Orange Lutheran (17-5) is ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 2AA while Brea Olinda (17-4) is sixth.
The Lancers, coming off losses to Santa Margarita and Rosary in the Trinity League, led 22-19 early in the third quarter before taking control.
Senior guard Ashari Cassell sparked the surge with a driving layup. Sophomore guard Shea Joko followed moments later with a 3-pointer.
Sophomore Taliyah McFerson, who missed the Lancers’ two league games this week, extended the run with a basket in the post.
Cassell then added a pair of steals that led to baskets by freshman guard Kelly Garrity and McFerson.
Joko capped the run with a baseline jumper that gave Orange Lutheran a 35-19 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Joko led Orange Lutheran with 10 points while Princess Cassell and McFerson each added nine points.
Sophia Williams scored Brea Olinda’s last seven points en route to a game-high 12 points. Faith Knapp added 11 points and eight rebounds.

No. 13 Esperanza 44, Cerritos 35: Kaiya Mack scored 20 points to lead the Aztecs (16-5), who played without Alyssa Kubo and Julia Lavigne.
Aliso Niguel 60, No. 25 El Dorado 50: Junior Shanna Brown scored 25 points to lead the Wolverines to the upset.
No. 1 Mater Dei 66, Chaminade 52: Utah-bound Lani White scored 26 points, one off her career high, to lead the Monarchs (16-3).
