Orange Lutheran’s girls basketball team finished a challenging week Saturday by showing its resolve.

The Lancers, ranked fifth in Orange County, closed the third quarter with a 13-0 run en route to a 48-32 victory against No. 14 Brea Olinda in a clash of Division 2AA contenders at the Matson Classic at Orange Lutheran.

Orange Lutheran (17-5) is ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 2AA while Brea Olinda (17-4) is sixth.

The Lancers, coming off losses to Santa Margarita and Rosary in the Trinity League, led 22-19 early in the third quarter before taking control.

Senior guard Ashari Cassell sparked the surge with a driving layup. Sophomore guard Shea Joko followed moments later with a 3-pointer.

Sophomore Taliyah McFerson, who missed the Lancers’ two league games this week, extended the run with a basket in the post.

Cassell then added a pair of steals that led to baskets by freshman guard Kelly Garrity and McFerson.

Joko capped the run with a baseline jumper that gave Orange Lutheran a 35-19 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Joko led Orange Lutheran with 10 points while Princess Cassell and McFerson each added nine points.
