Orange Lutheran, Huntington Beach win their openers at NHSI baseball tournament

Orange Lutheran’s baseball team began defense of its National High School Invitational championship with a 6-3 win over Hanover of Virginia in the first round of the tournament Wednesday in Cary, N.C.

The Lancers, champions of the past three NHSI tournaments, have won 14 consecutive NHSI games.

Orange Lutheran senior left-hander Oliver Santos struck out nine in his 4.2 innings of pitching. Mikey Romero and Ben Reiland both drove in two runs. Derek Curiel had two hits and scored two runs.

The Lancers, No. 1 in the Orange County top 25 and the first-place team in the Trinity League, had a 4-0 lead after two innings. They play Basic Academy of Nevada in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Also at the NHSI:

No. 2 Huntington 3, McQuaid Jesuit 1: Matthew Lopez allowed one run on three hits in his six innings of pitching for the Oilers (13-4) in their win over the Knights of Rochester, NY.

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Brian Trujillo scored on Marco Martinez’s ground out. Nicholas Dumesnil drove in the other two runs in the fifth inning.

Huntington Beach, which won the NHSI title in 2016, will play Hamilton of Chandler, Ariz., in the quarterfinals Thursday.

St. Johns Country Day 8, Servite 4: The Friars’ NHSI debut ended in a loss to the Spartans of Oak Park, Fla.

Nicholas Gallardo, Agustin Gutierrez, Jarrod Hocking and Mikiah Negrete drove in Servite’s runs.

Servite plays Buford of Georgia in the consolation bracket Thursday.
