Pedestrian struck, killed on I-5 near University City; northbound lanes closed

A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday night while walking in freeway lanes on Interstate 5 in the University City area, authorities said.

It happened about 11:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-5 near the Genesee Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian — reportedly a woman — was first reported to be walking on the freeway a few minutes before 11:30 p.m., according to a Highway Patrol incident log. A witness told dispatchers the pedestrian was walking against the traffic in a middle lane.

Shortly thereafter, Highway Patrol officers arrived to the scene and requested personnel from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Around 11:45 p.m., officers shut down all four northbound lanes and began diverting traffic off the freeway onto Genesee Avenue, according to the CHP incident log and Caltrans San Diego.

It was unclear when the lanes were expected to reopen.

This is a breaking story that will be updated when more information is available.
