Police arrest second man in shooting death in downtown San Diego

A second man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting near Petco Park earlier this month.
San Diego police said Jaelen Dower, 20, was taken into custody in Encanto at about 1 p.m. on Saturday. He was booked into San Diego County jail on one count of assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm and other firearms-charges.
The arrest stems from an ongoing investigation by San Diego homicide detectives into the death of 29-year-old John Reed.
Authorities said Reed was involved in brief argument with a group of people at about 4:25 a.m. on Jan. 20 near L Street and Sixth Avenue. One member of the group pulled a handgun and shot Reed in the upper body. The group then fled the area.
Officers and paramedics tried to save Reed, but the San Diego resident died before he could be taken to the hospital.
About 24 hours after the shooting, police arrested 20-year-old Dajon Shingleton at his home in Spring Valley. He was booked into jail on suspicion of murder.
Detectives working the case identified Dower as allegedly having provided the firearm used in the shooting, said homicide Lt. Steve Shebloski.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
