Officers were called shortly before 8:30 a.m. by someone reporting that a woman had just given birth in a canyon, said San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez.

Officers found an unresponsive baby in the canyon off Landis Street near 40th Street, which is near Cherokee Point Elementary School.

The baby and mother were transported to the hospital. The baby was pronounced dead. The condition of the mother was not known.
