A 20-year-old man was hospitalized early Monday after he was attacked by a machete-wielding assailant in Otay Mesa, San Diego police said.

Police said the victim was at a gathering at a home on Magellan Street near Hawaii Avenue when he was told someone was messing with his car around 3:45 a.m.

As the victim went to check on his vehicle, he was confronted by a man carrying a machete who struck him several times with the weapon, said police Officer Sarah Foster.

Paramedics responded and took the victim to the hospital, where he was treated for multiple lacerations. His wounds were not considered life threatening, Foster said.

Police were looking for the assailant, who was last seen running away. He was wearing all gray clothing, police said. No other details were released.
