Possible human bone found in Carlsbad creek bed

Several law enforcement agencies are investigating after a possible human bone was found on the bank of a creek bed Thursday morning.

A man spotted the bone in the El Salto Falls area near Adobe Springs Road around 10 a.m., officials said.

“The medical examiner believes the bone might be human but more investigation is needed,” said Jodee Reyes, Carlsbad police spokesperson.

Investigators know little about the bone’s appearance, including how it got to the area or how long it had been there, Reyes added. The land near the 40-foot cascade is a sacred spot to Native Americans as it was home to native villages for centuries. Ice age fossils were discovered during construction of the nearby Quarry Creek community.

The sheriff’s Search and Rescue dive team was called to the scene to assist in searching for additional evidence, said sheriff’s Lt. Nanette McMasters.

“There are several agencies assisting us as this is a great training opportunity for our regional partners, and agencies like SDSO have resources we do not have,” Reyes said.

Carlsbad Police officials asked people to stay out of the area while they continue to investigate.
